THE NEWGATE STREET CLOCK: SIX BASIC FACTS

1

The Newgate Street Clock was erected on 19th May 2007 on the Newgate Street Tower as  a joint project between the City of London and the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, (an ancient London "Livery Company", or guild).

2

The Clock was sponsored by a number of members of the  Clockmakers Company, to celebrate the 375th Anniversay of the Company in 2006. The arms in the dial centre are those of the  Company.

3

The  Clock was designed by Joanna Migdal and was made by Smith of Derby . It is intended to be highly accurate and is regularly monitored by Global Positioning System satellites.

4

The Clock was unveiled by the Lord Mayor of London on May 31st 2007.

5

The Clock's design was inspired by the  work of Joseph Windmills,  a celebrated late 17th century  London clock and watchmaker, whose first workshop was about 130 metres from the Newgate Tower. This information was derived from the Clockmakers' Museum in nearby Guildhall.

6

The Newgate clock is believed to be currently the only  public clock with a "wandering hour" dial in the world.
